leather 6-pack carton

Unofficially named the “Spartan Carton”, the Reusable Leather Beer Carton ($65) consists of riveted leather attached to a masonite handle, allowing you to transport your favorite craft beer in minimalistic style.  Designed for use with the 6-Pack Bike Frame Cinch ($22), a simple leather strap that can secure your valuable brew to the top tube of any bike.  It’s no surprise they’re made in Portland, OR.

Dogfish Head – Gluten-Free

27 Dec

Nothing makes us sadder than the realization that some people can not enjoy beer for medical reasons. Celiac Disease is no joke.  It damages the lining of the small intestine and prevents it from absorbing parts of food that are important for staying healthy.¹ Fortunately for those diagnosed with celiac disease, they can treat the symptoms of celiac and heal the vili in the lining of the intestines by eating a gluten-free diet.²  Gluten is found in wheat, barley, rye, and possibly oats.  The same base ingredients of our favorite beverage, BEER!

Dogfish Head Brewery in Milton, Delaware has listened to the cries of the gluten-free masses and created its Tweasonale.  Coming to shelves late January 2012, this “fruit-foward” gluten-free beer will be released 4 times per year to satisfy the hop cravings of more than 3 million diagnosed Americans³.  You don’t have to be on a gluten free diet to enjoy gluten free beer either. After all it’s still…Beer!

Check out the brewery’s website to learn more and find the beer here : http://www.dogfish.com/

Ninkasi Sleighr Dark Double Alt Ale

26 Dec

ninkasi sleighr

Christmas beer.  The name is synonymous with brown, malty ales usually spiced with nutmeg, cinnamon or something similar and this year was no different for the most part, except a few breweries tweaked some older recipes to give Christmas more of a hop-balance.  Ninkasi Sleighr Dar Double Alt ($2.87) is one example of just such a beer.  Full of flavor, smooth, crisp and with a high alcohol content, Sleighr is the perfect beer staying in from the cold and eating a Christmas dinner, below is info from Ninkasi.

White Castle Testing Beer Sales

24 Dec

Nothing goes together quite like a burger and a craft beer, so it seems only natural that American fast food joints should be carrying the stuff.  Unfortunately, due to government red tape, increased liability and a public image to uphold, the only drinks available have been soft drinks.  Yet it seems obvious that beer would sell and easily cover any government licensing or increase in insurance costs, and that’s what White Castle in Lafayette, IN is testing.  Beginning only with domestic brews for $3, if they see success, it’s only a matter of time before we might be able to pick up a full-flavored craft IPA to wash down our burgers.  Check the link below for an article on other ways White Castle is trying to increase revenue.

The Lost Abbey – Gift of the Magi

22 Dec

Two thousand years ago people began telling a story about three kings that made a very special journey. Guided by a bright star in the sky, they traveled a great distance bearing what are now some of the most famous gifts of all time: Gold, frankincense, and myrrh.  Port Brewing Company in southern California pays tribute to that tale and the season by brewing their Gift of the Magi.  Not just another “holiday” spiced brew, Gift of the Magi is bittered with the bark of frankincense, and they claim to have used the smallest amount of myrrh.  It’s golden color finishes the story.  Check your bottle shop and pick up “a massive Golden Ale fit for a king (or Queen)” while the season is still right.

BRODIE Home Brew Sediment Catchers

21 Dec

Sed-Ex Sediment caps

As anyone who home brews will tell you, if you bottle condition, you’re going to have yeast sediment in your beer.  The only way to avoid the build up is to force carbonate the brew, which typically means kegging, rendering your delicious creation immobile…until now.

BRODIE Home Brew Sediment Catchers ($38/15 caps) are a clever new product that promises to keep yeast sediment out of your bottles without having to force carb.

United State of GOOD Beer

While we strongly disagree about one or two of the choices (Landshark for Florida? Really?), here’s a nice infographic from GOOD.is that showcases one craft brewery in each state of the US.  Do you agree with their brewery for your state?  If so, they unfortunately fell short of their fundraising project to make the map into a poster, but enough fan emails might just be enough to convince them to try again.
